A couple of interesting lessons I learned. One, I was surprised to see two blogs from outside of this month on the list. #7 from January 2011 and #10 from April 2009 get hits nearly every day because of the tags and Google searches. So, it is cool to see blogs still get traffic after all that time has passed. Two, I need to improve in giving titles to my posts. Some of my titles would be completely unclear without the description in parentheses shows me a growth edge I have as a blogger.

I appreciate you and your presence here on the blog. Thanks to Michael Hyatt for inspiring me to start this feature in 2012 and for the model for this post.

Question: Just out of curiosity, which of the top 10 was your favorite post and why? Any topics you would like me to explore here in February 2012?

facing your finances with courage

“Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the willingness to act in spite of your fear.”

-Michael Hyatt, CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers

Two years ago, I started facing my financial demons. Those demons looked like $10,000 in credit card debt, undisciplined spending on Starbucks and Rock Star Energy Drinks, barely paying my bills, tithing intermittently and never being generous to others with my finances.

And like most demons, once you start dealing with one, another rises up.  Kind of like the “If you give a mouse a cookie, he will ask for a glass of milk” idea I mentioned during the Q&A time after my talk last Sunday night at Crash.  Financial demons were connected to my insecurity about what others would think of me and my struggle to maintain an identity beyond my social acceptance.

My fear never went away. I am not Arnold Schwarzenegger when it comes to money; I still feel like I have the muscles of Steve Urkel.  But I am facing those demons.  Every day.  Taking steps I have never taken before.  Making progress I have never experience before.  Being able to do things for others I never have before.

An elementary-age girl will attend North Phoenix’s summer camp next week because I faced my finances with courage.  When I think of how she will laugh with other girls, sing about God’s love for her, and hear my friend Matt share with her how God made her into a masterpiece, the sacrifices seem so much smaller and insignificant.

The fear of dealing with money has never gone away, but it is no longer debilitating. It no longer wins. By the power of God and the partnership of my wife and some great friends, I can now say I know courage as well as fear.

And that’s something to celebrate.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the willingness to act in spite of your fear.

What do you need to act on today?  What do you need to do, IN SPITE of the fear?
