Words.

I have loved words for a long time. I am told I was a talker from a young age.
I surprise few when I share…

I am a writer.

My mom’s college degree was in speech and communication. She’s now a freelance writer and she built into me a love for words and writing. During the time I was home schooled, she made sure I had ample time to develop my passion.

But, I have always struggled with confidence. Presently, my closet contains over 40 journals (some partially-filled, others overflowing) with my words inside. Ideas abound for future writing.

I started this blog in December 2008. Nearly 4 and a half years and over 600 posts later, I am still working on being a good writer. And I struggle with even writing those words…

I am a writer.

In the second half of 2012, I received a free copy of Jeff Goins’ book You Are a Writer (So Start Acting Like One). Jeff’s singular purpose in this book was to challenge his readers to embrace their identity as a writer. Frankly, reading that book – mostly at night while feeding my son – gave me the courage to embrace what I’d only talked about or daydreamed about before then.

I am a writer.

In January 2013, I had a very public moment where I shared with hundreds…

I am a writer.

A funny, blind musical genius was on stage that day and this video captures what resulted from that confession.

Just a few days later, in response to a Twitter post from a guy named Ben Arment (who I’m never met), with two hours to spare before my deadline, I submitted a piece supporting a website that launched in early February. I was excited to read that it was accepted and would be published later in the spring.

I am a writer.

Frankly, I forgot about it as February became a crazy month for me.

Last Friday, I was talking to Dani (my wife) about the lesson she was going to teach in the College Bible Study we lead. My phone buzzed next to me. I checked it and read this notification from @storychicago on Twitter: “Writer @scottesavage shares five ways to unplug and experience meaningful things: http://storychicago.com/updates/five-ways-unplug“

Those words will not soon..if ever…be forgotten.

I am a writer.

I read the final version. I shared it on social media. Friends shared feedback. I saw support through retweets and likes. The article has a ton of likes, which makes me feel like I shared something worthwhile.
I’m a writer.

I still have miles and miles to go. But 2013 has already been a great year to confirm my confidence as a writer and I’m excited for some evolving plans to take my writing to the next level.

I am a writer.
